Traditional Therapeutic Uses Of Whiskey In Chinese Medicine

Whiskey is a type of alcohol or spirit, and like most spirits is strong, warming and when consumed in small amount can be beneficial to health.

Wine is discussed in The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Medicine, an ancient text of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for moving blockages in meridians, sudden fainting and ear conditions like tinnitus. Whiskey is hot in nature, harmonises the blood and qi, opens the channels, tonifies the yang, and expels cold.

A nip of whiskey can be enjoyed to warm the body after exposure to the cold and Mary MacKillop was said to drink it once a month for period pain, perhaps more soulful than popping a neurofen?

Occasionally I like making a hot toddy in winter if I feel like I am coming down with a chill. Place a dash of whiskey, a piece of lemon squeezed, some cloves, a quill of cinnamon and honey in a glass, top with hot water and enjoy!
