Birth can be a challenging and traumatic event. In 2015, the Ministry of Health Maternity Report shows that one-third of women had a “normal birth”, a spontaneous labour without obstetrical intervention.
One In Every Three Women Had A Normal Birth
So already the odds are against us. It is more common to have a normal birth than not.
Elective Caesarean Section Rates Have Increased
From 2006 to 2015 there was a significant increase in the proportion of elective caesarean sections (C-section) and a significant decrease in spontaneous vaginal births. C-sections were found to be most common amongst women 35 years old or more, Indian, Asian and European women, and women from a lower socio-economic background.
You can’t guarantee that you will have a good, normal birth but the truth is there are ways to ensure you are strong, healthy and well enough to increase your chances of having one.
I have found in my 8 years of practice that a lot of women luck out when it comes to their genuine and hard-earned efforts to have the best birth possible for themselves and their baby. There is a lot of fear these days about giving birth, and there is a lot you can do about it. Just hoping that it will be all okay leaves you in a very vulnerable position.
What Is The Big Deal About Having A Natural Birth? Does It Really Matter?
I always thought it was so important to always have a natural birth. And then as time passed by and I watched a lot of the babies that my patients and people around me had, initially I thought there doesn’t seem to be a big difference what is the big deal about?
But as they have grown bigger, let’s say to 5 to 10 years old, I have noticed a common factor that kids that tend to have more medicine; antibiotics, panadol, steroids etc. the more sicker they get. They get sicker earlier. In Chinese medicine, a healthy child should have a strong immunity because they are young and vital, they have not had the hardship and toughness of life that we adults have endured. Now there are findings that the number of teenagers and children on antidepressants have doubled.
Why The Best Birth You Have Does Matter
If you think about, the real risks involved with intervention are all the medicines administered to you and the baby. Anaesthesia is like cold in Chinese medicine, and excess cold in the body stops circulation and it is easier for disease to settle in. So if you can have a good, normal and spontaneous labour, then you have spared both you and your baby the harmful effects of surgery, drugs and a longer and harder recovery process, not to mention more pain and more risk of difficult breastfeeding.
What If I Can’t Have a Natural Birth Or There Is High Risk For Me?
I cannot give advice however I do observe that women who are most likely going to need a C-section, and want to try usually end up in a long, traumatic birth that ends up in an emergency C-section and both health of the mother and baby are compromised. Acupuncture before and after c-section can reduce the trauma and cold in the body and ease pain, calm the mind and allow the milk to come in.

How I Love Hearing Great Birth Stories
Great births do happen! It is the most wonderful news when I hear back from a patient and she informs me that the birth was quick, straight-forward and spontaneous, with no tears or post-partum haemorrhage, just a normal, healthy labour. When this happens to a woman it is very empowering and she certainly can love and appreciate her body for the amazing and brilliant thing it truly is.
