In Chinese Medicine, amenorrhoea is known as Bi Jeng translating to closed menstruation or no period. It is related to an ovulatory dysfunction. The word amenorrhoea aetymologically means no moon flow;
a – without
men – moon
rrhoea – flow
Linguistic evidence that your uterus, menstruation and the moon are all connected!
Causes of No Period
There are various reasons why you are not menstruating. Obviously it is natural to not have a period during pregnancy, breastfeeding and around peri-menopause or menopause. Medically there is primary and secondary amenorrhoea. Excessive physical work or emotional stress, hereditary weakness, restrictive or poor diets and not enough rest.
Primary Amenorrhoea
In Chinese medicine, primary amenorrhoea is related to a pre-natal essence (Jing) deficiency. Chinese medicine usually can’t help these women get their periods back. Although, it can certainly support a lot of uncomfortable signs and symptoms associated.
Secondary Amenorrhoea
This occurs when the periods have stopped for at least three months, usually with the woman having a history of a regular cycle. This is associated with a post-natal qi deficiency. Hence is common with orthorexia, women who have eating disorders or restrictive diets like vegan diets.
This is the most common form of why women get no periods.
Sometimes women can experience post-pill amenorrhoea, when they stop taking the pill the period stops due to the lack of hormonal support and the endocrine system taking time to regulate itself.
It can also be due to emotional stress, where the heart energy is affected and disturbs its channel that connects to the uterus. The uterus is the second heart of a woman in Chinese medicine.
Energetic Imbalances Causing No Period
There are some deficient pattens that cause the period to stop. More hereditary types are a deficiency of Kidney & Liver Yin energy. Or generalised Qi & Blood Deficiency for women where there is tiredness, dryness, dizziness and poor sleep for example.
The excess patterns are when there are energetic blockages in the body. This can be where there is excess weight or very poor circulation and pain. It could range from qi and blood stasis to a long-term spleen deficiency that causes damp-phlegm obstructing the Zi Bao (uterus).

Chinese Herbal Medicine For No Periods
Chinese herbal medicine is excellent for supporting women with no or late periods. But did you know that when we perform your full Chinese Medicine diagnosis we prescribe the herbal formula specific to your needs? It’s very important to understand what the imbalance of energy is. For example you may need herbs to move blood, nourish blood or support the kidney energy. Or you could have a lot of damp and cold in the lower body preventing the period to flow. Chinese herbs can take 3 to 6 months to support the cycle to regulate. Usually women with no or late period will have a tendency to a longer menstrual cycle but the most important goal is to get it regular.
Health Risks With No Period
The problem with having very late, long periods or no periods is that long-term it can cause hyperplasia. Hyperplasia is when your uterine lining builds up and gets too thick. The uterus is a hollow organ and must regularly fill and empty. If you don’t menstruate, then the uterine lining can get so thick that you may get irregular cells form and long-term down the track even cancer.
